It is not overly complex and should not be a barrier to use.
#MAC SIERRA EMULATOR INSTALL#
– Basically you need to make disc images or download disc images for OS 9 install or any other CDs you wish to use. Compressed and read-only formats will not work. Make sure you choose either “read/write” (.dmg) or “DVD/CD Master” (.cdr) for the format. You can create an image from a CD with Disk Utility. OSX 10.8 and later prevents mounting of physical CD-ROMs in SheepShaver but images created from CD-ROMs still work fine. With this assumption I can point out some relevant quirks with SheepShaver that could trip you up but are easily resolvable. I shall make an assumptions that anyone reading this post and looking to replicate this will be running (High) Sierra. Sheep Shaver running OS 9.0.4 Classic on High Sierra
#MAC SIERRA EMULATOR SOFTWARE#
Having read around the subject of running OS 9 in an emulator I settled on using a free piece of software called SheepShaver this allows you to emulate up to OS 9.0.4 (anything above this will not run).

#MAC SIERRA EMULATOR MAC OS#
So there is a nostalgia in running Mac OS 9 again and having easy (possibly not fully legally) access to a slew of old Mac software. This harps back to my introduction to Macs, when I was first fiddling about with them the only ones I could afford were second hand Performa 6300 or early Power Mac G4s (that I wish I still had now, glances at eBay watch list). Classic Mac Emulation On macOS – Mac OS 9 I will focus on Classic Mac emulation in this article as the Amiga side is a bit more involved and I am still learning the ropes on that (look out for a followup post later). I have been working on Classic Mac and Amiga emulation, with a slew of great guides and excellent free software. Giving me the opportunity to play about with some emulation options without disturbing my main work Mac.

#MAC SIERRA EMULATOR PRO#
Spectre existed for the ST, and I used it back in the day, but w.o a dongle it would not boot, and ShapeShifter would work as a disk image (may have been a crack?).Classic Mac Emulation On macOS, having just resurrected my 2008 Mac Pro from the doldrums, it has now become a permanent feature in the office / retro basement. I selected UAE->Shapeshifter to see how compatible that emulator was with legacy Mac hardware, under such extreme conditions, as it added a layer of complexity, and UAE was pretty much the only other 68K emu that had software mac emus. My general reason was to test endian changing emulation performance. Suffice to say, it was rather.unresponsive (iMac G4 'lamp' model running 10.3), but it did work. or Stop the Madness, as I used to use those, too. I had a fun experiment once running a set of four nested emulators (over the host OS): OSX -> VPC (W98 or XP) -> UAE -> ShapeShifter -> IIe (a M68K //e emulator that I also used to run on my 68030/40 Powerooks) or may have been ][ in a Mac. System 6) inside Sheepshaver running OS9. If need be, you can always run an emulator for earlier MacOS (e.g. These used to be a lot of early mac emulators though, such as vMac. I believe that it will run System 7 and above, perhaps System 7,5 and above, but IDK about anything earlier. I used to run Sheepshaver on 10.4 and 10.5, as I had to use a specific programme that was never ported to OSX, via 9.x. You can learn more about Sheepshaver here:Īnd I found the most complete and ready to run version of SheepShaver available if you google: "COI (Classic on Intel) v4.0.1 'Chubby Bunny'" and follow the link. In any event, merely coping files will work just as well in OS 9. SheepShaver runs Mac OS 9.0.4 for me and may work with System 7.1 but I have never tried it. I then return the micro-SD card to the Floppy EMU and boot up my SE/30 and have access to the newly copied files. When finished I "unmount" the HD20 file from Sheepshaver, and quit Sheepshaver, and then copy the HD20 file back to the USB-mounted micro-SD card and it overwrites the old file. By default, SheepShaver give you access to a mounted drive named "Unix" which is in actuality the Shared folder inside your Users folder in your Home folder, so you have immediate access to files downloaded from Macintosh Garden that you move to this folder on your Mojave Mac. those files I want to access on the HD20 when connected to my SE/30. I then use SheepShaver to copy/paste etc. I then run SheepShaver and attach the HD20 file to it as a mountable drive.

I them copy my "HD20" file from the Floppy EMU to my Mac Mini desktop, because I have found attempting the next few steps directly to the USB-mounted micro-SD card is unstable when I try to read/write to it directly from SheepShaver. I mount my micro-SD card from my Floppy EMU on my Mac Mini High Sierra.
